On the October 10th  2017, the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) added three Central Clearing Counterparties (CCP’s) to its list of recognised central counterparties (CCPs) based in third countries.
The European Markets Infrastructure Regulation (EMIR) requires third-country CCPs to be recognised by ESMA in order to operate in the European Union.
By awarding these CCPS “recognised status” ESMA is recognising these CCPS as having a regulatory regime which is equivalent to that central of counterparties in the European Union.
